Top 5 teams who could win Euro 2020

By Jamie Smith

1. France – 5/1 with Paddy Power

The Real Madrid striker has been in international exile for years, but his return to the squad adds even more firepower to an attack featuring PSG star Kylian Mbappe and Barcelona striker Antoine Griezmann.

Paul Pogba of Man United and Chelsea’s Champions League winning star N’Golo Kante provide world-class ability in midfield and the depth France have at the back is so strong they could afford to ignore Aymeric Laporte, who will instead play for Spain.

France are arguably even more lethal than when they won the World Cup three years ago. With no obvious weaknesses, Didier Deschamps’ side are going to take some stopping.

2. Germany – 9/1 with SportNation

Recalls are all the rage for Euro 2020, with Joachim Low bringing back the veteran duo Thomas Muller of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels after previously publicly ending their international careers.

Muller’s superb haul of 11 league goals and 18 assists for the perennial Bundesliga champions this season gave Low little choice but to announce a humiliating U-turn over the 31-year-old forward.

Low’s departure after the tournament has already been confirmed with Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick set to replace him. It is unclear how this news affects Germany’s chances of glory.

After a group-stage exit at the last World Cup, far more is expected of Germany at Euro 2020. They look well-priced at 9/1 with SportNation.

3.  Spain – 9/1 with Unibet

Champions in both 2008 and 2012, Spain badly underperformed at Russia 2018, crashing out in the last 16.

Luis Enrique is back as coach after stepping down for family reasons and he has made a big call by leaving out long-term captain Sergio Ramos due to injury issues.

Laporte’s decision to switch his international allegiance will help to fill the void left by Ramos, but Spain’s problems could be at the other end of the pitch.

Atletico Madrid’s Alvaro Morata and Villareal’s Europa League winner Gerard Moreno are the only two recognised central strikers in the Spain squad, but the emergence of Barcelona teenager Pedri adds a dash of creativity – he looks like an ideal heir to Andres Iniesta.

At 9/1 with Unibet, Spain are a strong option in the Euro 2020 betting odds.

4. England – 11/2 with Unibet

Spurs and England captain Harry Kane provides guaranteed goals up front for England, as long as his dodgy ankles hold up and speculation about his future does not act as a distraction.

England have reached World Cup and Nations League semi-finals in the past few years, so they are making progress despite Gareth Southgate’s defensive nature.

A price of 11/2 with Unibet for the Three Lions to triumph does look a little short, though.

5. Belgium – 6/1 with Bet365

Long considered dark horses for major international tournaments, as the top team in FIFA’s world rankings Belgium are now among the favourites to win the Euro 2020 title.

In Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne and Inter Milan’s Romelu Lukaku they have a potent pairing who will scare anyone – they could make the 6/1 offered by Bet365 look like a huge bargain.

Roberto Martinez – who is being linked with a switch to Spurs – will be hoping Eden Hazard can get fully fit after the winger endured another injury-affected campaign with Real Madrid.
